Course Material

Hello, my name is Chris.I want to begin with a credo I have as a teacher.I believe that in Math and Physics, the answer is being too heavily valued compared to the process of thinking about getting to the answer. This can cause students to give up quickly when they immediately don’t know the answer to a problem. Therefore, I want to be a teacher that emphasizes the problem solving process, clear explanations, critical thinking and perseverance over simply the final answer.I graduated with a Physics degree from UBC and worked at the Quantum Matter Institute as a Photonic/Cryogenic Technician. Although I found this role to be exciting, I wasn't sure if this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life and thought back to my fun experience TA'ing PHYS159 and tutoring high school physics. At some point, I decided that I want to be a teacher, so I quit my job and I am currently a student teacher in SFU's PDP program.The biggest inspiration for me was the late Ian Affleck. He was brilliant, charismatic and had this amazing ability to make complicated topics seem clear in his lectures and office hours. He was able to answer any question I threw at him easily and he was so knowledgeable in his field. I always left his class thinking, “He is so cool, I want to be like that.”Physics and Math is fun. There’s seriously no better feeling than solving a question you’ve been stuck on for hours and understanding the answer (not because the back of the textbook said so, but because you really "get" it). As a teacher, I get to feel that same excitement vicariously when I’m able to be involved in getting a student to have that moment!
